Hancock Watch

December 2007 Updates.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA allotment 3H Parish of Jeeralang - Traralgon Creek crossing recently constructed. Note massive piles of sediment ready to wash away in the event of rainfall. How are native fish supposed to negotiate these culverts, particularly in times of low flow? This crossing has been 'upgraded?' so that a detour can be made when existing bridges get reconstructed. Latrobe City Shire is responsible for these works, which if done by Hancock would probably mean a breach to the Code of Forest Practice.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA allotment 3H Parish of Jeeralang - Traralgon Creek crossing. Traralgon has crown land buffers of 20 metres along both sides of the creek. Sediment can play havoc with native fish species.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA 3H Parish of Jeeralang & CA 7D Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. This image probably taken in early 2007 showing that logging of this pine plantation had been completed. Not plantation's proxmity to Traralgon Creek.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA 7D Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. Dodgy culvert and creek crossing. Note high erosion potential. Who is responsible here Hancock or Latrobe City Council?

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA 7D Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. This more than likely is a breach to the Code of Forest Practice.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA 7D Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. Same creek crossing, note high erosion potential of soils.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA 7D Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. Eroding and slumping logging road. Sediment erosion from drainage line can be clearly seen in this photo. The erosion line continues all of the way to Traralgon Creek meaning that this site has been leaching sediment into this waterway.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA 7D Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. Plantation in close proximity to Traralgon Creek.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - CA 15E Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. This is actually drainage line. It is entirely choked with sediment and rocks probably washed down the catchment in times of heavy rain. A large amount of Hancock leasehold land lies at the headwaters of this particular drainage line. A breache to the Code of Forest Practices was recently determined by Latrobe City Shire in a nearby plantation CA 15F Parish of Callignee in regards to slash and log debris piled between a track and water course. The above erosion would remarkably avoid breaches to the Code.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. Eroding logging road batters at this location have seen large amounts of trees fall onto logging road. This is serious as it could block access to site in times of fire.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. Weed infestation.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. Eroding batter at this location is between 7m - 10m high.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - Parish of Callignee - Traralgon Creek catchment. Weeds overkill.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - Middle Creek catchment. At this location on Upper Middle Creek Road there has been a washout (again) of the logging road where Smiths Creek flows under the road. Culverts were removed from the site a year or so ago and look at the result. The resulting rock and sediment has then been washed into Middle Creek.

December 2007: Strzelecki Ranges - Middle Creek catchment. Where Smiths Creek meets Middle Creek. This is a hazard to members of the public who use this road and also is a hindrance to fire fighting, as fire trucks will not be able to negotiate this road.

December 2007 - Western Strzeleckis. Hancock logging pine plantations in Deadlock Creek catchment.

December 2007 - Western Strzeleckis. Hancock logging hardwood in Deadlock Creek catchment.

December 2007 - Western Strzeleckis. Hancock most likely removing native vegetation in Deadlock Creek catchment.

December 2007: Western Strzeleckis. Gutting the headwaters of Tarwin River West Branch.
