Hancock Watch

November 2008 Updates

New: Cores and Links Background Information here

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges - College Creek bulldozer works carried out by Hancock. College Creek is of national conservation significance and Hancock plan to log it soon. This was called Track 12 but has been renamed Track 32 by Hancock.

November 2008 Strzelecki Ranges - Corner of Grand Ridge Road and Yarram Madalya Road. Most of this prime tourist area will be logged by Hancock in the near future. Does this look like plantation to you?

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges Jack River. Clearfelling inside the Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve, with state significant rainforest, possibly of national significance in the background.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Jack River Rainforest as seen from Jack River Road.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Jack River catchment. Gutted E. Viminalis site inside cores and links rainforest reserve. Hancock logging native forest under the guise of plantation logging?

May 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Jack River catchment, taken from approximately the same location as the preceeding image. Note the stands of Viminalis.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Jack River catchment. Dubois Track appalling to non-existent drainage in breach of the Code of Forest Practices. Where is Wellington Shire?

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Logging in Jack River catchment in close proximity to rainforest.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Jack River Catchment, old pine coupe located on Cable Track. This site has obviously been sprayed with pesticides to kill regenerating native ground covers and understorey. Under the Cores and Links Heads of Agreement areas logged were supposed to be managed to encourage regeneration. This site was regenerating beautifully. There was no need to kill off the successful regeneration. The site has been sprayed and replanted with Mountain Ash at considerable expense. The site could have regenerated naturally at no cost.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Jack River Catchment, old pine coupe located on Cable Track. Obvious fertilising of Eucalpyts occurring. Why? Are there plans not to hand back the site but to log it in the future?

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Jack River Catchment, old pine coupe located on Cable Track. Trees planted on this old logging track.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Macks Creek Catchment, old pine coupe located just off Roberts Road. This site has been replanted with pine and in the future the herbicide hexazinone could be used. This site lies in a water supply that supplies 30 people with drinking water. What guarantees are there that herbicides used on this site will not runoff into Macks Creek? Who is monitoring the water quality?

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. The extremely rare Strzelecki Warm Temperate Rainforest located at Macks Creek, surrounded by pine plantations.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges - Macks Creek and the new bridge built on Roberts Road. This bridge was built exclusively for the timber industry, so that log trucks could save 8 minutes on their journey to Maryvale Pulp Mill. Residents who live along Roberts Road complained about the bridge upgrade and the impending increase in log truck traffic but lost their appeal.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Macks Creek Rainforest. This is Roberts Road where increased log truck traffic will occur to transport pine logs to Morwell. The road will have to be undoubtedly widened further fragmenting the future of the extremely rare Strzelecki Warm Temperate Rainforest - as seen in this photo.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Macks Creek Catchment. Poor drainage off Roberts Road.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Tarra River catchment, pine logging in drainage lines that lie just outside the domestic water supply for Yarram.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges. Morwell River East Branch. Conversion of native forest to Shining Gum occurred at this site a couple of years ago.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges, Flynns Creek catchment. Pine logging on steep slopes bound to significantly increase sediment loads into the Gippsland Lakes catchment.

November 2008: Strzelecki Ranges, Flynns Creek Catchment. Logging and roading debris left on site.

November 2008: Carbon sink of questionable quality. http://www.climatepositive.org/strzelecki-ranges/
