November 2016 Updates

Strzelecki Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve. Little Albert River marked with yellow dot

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Little Albert River Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: Snig track and recent replanting in Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve. Approximately 233ha of land will be reserved in the Little Albert River catchment by 2019. This will occur after replanting if the regeneration meets the regeneration standards stipulated by the Victorian State Government.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Little Albert River Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: At this log landing it was evident that the site had been replanted, despite obvious breaches to the Code of Forest Practices. November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Little Albert River Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: Where is the audit process in determining adequate logging practices before replanting in the Reserve? Tree guards show that trees have been recently planted.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Little Albert River Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: A large amount of land has to be replanted here post logging.Note obvious signs of erosion occurring.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Little Albert River Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: At this part of the Reserve it appears that 20 pine trees have been retained from logging to be left inside the Reserve indefinately. Note that this area has been replanted.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Little Albert River Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: Natural regeneration is also occurring alongside the replantings. It is highly probable that the natural regeneration will be more successful.

November 2016: Haunted Hills/Wilderness Creek catchment. Due to poor growth rates MAI 8-15, Hancock are replanting a large portion of their bluegum plantations with radiata pine. At this location it is clear that thousands of coppicing bluegums have recently been poisoned.

November 2016: Haunted Hills/Wilderness Creek catchment. Fertiliser for the new pine plantations.

November 2016: Haunted Hills/Wilderness Creek catchment. Recently sprayed bluegum coppice inside future pine plantation.

November 2016: Haunted Hills/Wilderness Creek catchment. More evidence of recent spraying of coppicing bluegums.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/College Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: Seven year old regeneration inside this site of National conservation significance. Approximately 750ha of College Creek is due to be handed back to the State Government as a Reserve in the next few months.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/College Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: Healthy six year old regeneration inside this site of National conservation significance.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/College Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: Obvious signs that regeneration inside the Reserve was delayed due to Hancock having to re-enter "failing"regeneration areas and burning and bulldozing them. This practice has delayed some regeneration by a a few years.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/College Catchment/Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve: Image shows regenerated area that was bulldozed, thereby delaying regeneration. This demonstrates the failure of Department regeneration standards of 300 stems per hectare for planting post- harvest. When this standard was not met, the Company re-entered the site with . more machinery, more compaction, erosion and soil disturbance. Sound ecological advice was given over many years on how regeneration can be enhanced rather than relying on silvicultural techniques not suited to the rehabilitation of a rainforest reserve. This advice has been ignored and regrowth has been suppressed by decades.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Vaggs Creek Catchment: A giant erosion "balls-up" has occurred at this location, warranting a complaint to the Latrobe City Council who are meant to be ensuring that "balls-up" such as these do not occur.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Vaggs Creek Catchment: Erosion along snig track inside log dump.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Vaggs Creek Catchment: Log dump at Vaggs Creek. Note the piles of soil that have been deposited on the site after being removed from sub-standard logging road.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Vaggs Creek Catchment: A small landslip has opened up above the log road causing a culvert blowout and subsequent erosion.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Vaggs Creek Catchment: A disused snig track is eroding away at this location.

November 2016: Strzelecki Ranges/Vaggs Creek Catchment: FSC certified roading which has caused two 30-40 metre long landslips to occur.
