December 2013 Hancock Watch

December 2013: Willung Bluegum Plantation (Crown Allotment 42A Parish of Willung) takes a hit. It has been alleged that a number of koalas have been killed or injured at or near this plantation. Perhaps 200 hectares of this plantation, established by Australian Paper Plantations in the 1990's has been clearfelled.

December 2013: Willung Bluegum Plantation (Crown Allotment 38A Parish of Willung) takes a hit. The plantation borders key koala habitat in State Forest to the north of the plantation. Koalas obviously have been travelling into the plantation, where they are impacted when logging occurs. This has been an extremely controversial issue over the past 6 months, with companies in western Victoria also having big problems with koalas.

December 2013: Willung Bluegum Plantation (Crown Allotment 42A Parish of Willung) just before logging. The bluegums have a radiata pine understorey, probably meaning that this is an ex pine site which has regenerated along with the planted bluegums.

December 2013: Jumbuk Road getting widened to facilitate thousands of log truck movement over the next few years. Key koala trees have been destroyed in order to widen the road. The road will be extremely dangerous to drive on over the next few years due to log truck traffic.

December 2013 - Strzelecki Ranges/Smiths Creek Catchment: Recent clearfelling near remnant rainforest.

December 2013 - Strzelecki Ranges/Jeeralang Creek Catchment: Regeneration from February 2009 bushfires. Most of this regeneration will most likely be sprayed with herbicides as it will be seen to compete with planted trees.
