August 2010 Updates

College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges Continues to Fall

No Celebration For The Bush (Latrobe Valley Express August 26 2010)

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges Ransacking. This was a prime Owl and Glider site.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. FSC certified roading. This is supposed to be logged once and then added to the Strzelecki Cores and Links Reserve. With soil disturbance such as this due to wet weather work, how well will regeneration of native species occur?

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Another old growth stag knocked over by Hancock. Probably 30 stags have ended up this way at this location. Old stags provide vital habitat.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. This old growth tree has been spared from logging but will it survive the recent disturbance?

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Another view of recent logging at College Creek.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Track 32: This part of the reserve was logged in March 2009. 16 months later scant regeneration and bulldozers have been driving through some of what was regenerating. Why?

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges - Track 32: More poor regeneration some 16 months after logging. This site will also be added to the Strzelecki Reserve system.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Both sides of gully logged.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Koala (see yellow mark) spotted off track 32. A rare siting these days.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Another view of the koala. At this location several hectares of koala trees were logged by Hancock in early 2009.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Strzelecki Koala.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. More off road damage by Hancock.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Ditto. What will grow back here after this level of soil disturbance?

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. More wet weather work, with compacted soils.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. View east to more logging in catchment. Over 300ha's will fall.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. Offroad dozer tracks leaching onto logging road.

August 2010: College Creek/Strzelecki Ranges. More signs of dozers being driven into Strzelecki Cores and Links regeneration near track 32. The revegetation at this location was 16 months old.

August 2010: Jack River/Strzelecki Ranges. View looking into Strzelecki Cores and Links Reserve from Dubios Track.Regeneration at this site is approximately 2 years old and shows distinct lack of diversity.

August 2010: Albert River/Strzelecki Ranges. These are Shining Gum plantations off Albert River Road. The trees being held are 10 years of age and were due to be logged at 14 years of age. Failure of Shining Gum plantations is apparent in many areas in the Strzeleckis where it is not an indigenous species.

August 2010: Albert River/Strzelecki Ranges. More failing shining gum plantations off Albert River Road. Due to be logged in 4 years. This site was a mixed forest only 10 years ago. Destroyed for a pathetic experiment.

August 2010: Albert River/Strzelecki Ranges. 'Innovative' stream protection already starting to weaken less than one month after being layed on site.
