Hancock Watch

January 2009 Updates

January 2009: Strzelecki Ranges: Jeffrey Creek Catchment. Logging of 38 year old Mt Ash inside cores and links rainforest reserve by Hancock. This forest had been spared logging under the October 2006 HoA, until being undermined by a new secret agreement in August 2008.

January 2009: Strzelecki Ranges: Jeffrey Creek Catchment. Probably 30ha of 38 year old Mt Ash will be logged in Jeffrey Creek coupes, possibly making about 13,500m3 of pulplogs and 4,500m3 of sawlogs. Logging in these areas will provide enough hardwood for Hancock to meet ~4% of their annual contractual arrangements with Maryvale Pulp Mill.

January 2009: Strzelecki Ranges: Jack River Catchment. 27 year old pine plantation and logging road bite the dust.

January 2009: Strzelecki Ranges: Jack River Catchment. High soil mobility potential at this site. Another reason why many of Hancock's pine plantations are unsustainable. Erosion from this site will eventually end up in Nooramunga Marine Reserve.

January 2009: Strzelecki Ranges: Morwell River Catchment. Gray Gum Track. Failed tree planting is starting to occur at this site. Hancock gains by logging these forests and then replanting Mt Ash in order to gain carbon sequestration rights.

January 2009: Strzelecki Ranges: Morwell River Catchment. Craig Court inside Cores and Links Rainforest Reserve. Regeneration now starting to occur after the site had been sprayed with herbicide in 2007. One wonders why the site was sprayed at all? Note tree guards after site had also been replanted with Mt Ash. Why if not to log again in the future?
